Trains between Takayama, Kyoto and Tokyo?

Trains between Takayama, Kyoto and Tokyo?

I want to go from Tokyo to Takayama and then from Takayama to Kyoto but am seeing only bus service to a city that is not on the way. Any advice?

What source are you using that does not mention train connections between these cities?
