Transferring to shinkansen at Tokyo station 2015/11/27 14:31
Hi,

We planning to catch the Chuo line from Sagamiko, then transfer at Takao for Tokyo. We arrive at Tokyo station on the JR Chuo rapid at Platform 2@12:12pm.

Then we catch the 12:32pm Maxtoki shinkansen to Jomo Kogen.

How do we transfer to the 12:32p.m Shinkansen Max toki at platform 22 that goes to Jomo Kogen?

Is the Chuo platform underground and we need to get up to ground level and is it far to walk? Appreciate some directions so we dont miss the train.

Hyperdia shows a transfer time of 10 mins but that sounds pretty rushed.

The Chuo Line platform is above ground. You go down stairs/escalator to the concourse, where there will be a lot of signs that tell you directions to different JR lines including Shinkansen lines. And 10 minutes is plenty to make that connection.

No need back to/via JR Tokyo station.

Just operate numbers enough between Hachioji and Takasaki( JR Hachiko Line) especially after Komagawa.

Hi,

Some of the bigger stations in Japan have a complicated layout.
So it is very confusing if you want to follow directions given to you by somebody. Also sometimes corridors are temporally closed and the given directions are not up to date anymore.
So my advise is: Just follow the signs. There are plenty and are clear.

Have a nice trip.

The tip I would give, arriving at Tokyo, is to know the MaxToki platforms are with the green shinkansen signs (heading north) and not the blue signs for the lines heading south.

10 minutes should be fine for the transfer - it is only 5 minutes across the station. The only hold-up might be if you need the manned ticket gate and there are slow people dealing with some tricky ticket issue (for the transfer between the ordinary platforms and the shinkansen platforms).
