Where can I hike in March 2016? 2015/12/1 04:10
Hi

I have booked to visit Japan at the start of March 2016 with my partner for two weeks. We are landing in Tokyo and need to finish in Oita (to visit a friend) and then take a flight back to Tokyo to return home.

Where is it possible to hike at this time of year without the need for special equipment (just warm clothes and walking boots needed)? I think most of the Japanese Alps, Mount Fuji area etc. will be too snowy?

What about the areas around Kyoto and Osaka? Can you do the Kumano Kodo in early March? Are there any other hiking/walking options in other areas?

I would greatly appreciate any advice! Thanks!

Here is a list of some of Japan's good hiking areas, including information about timing and difficulty:

Around Kyoto you can pick some sections of these circle trails.

It can be cold in March in Kyoto but there's usually not much snow. If there is any snow, the Takao to Hozukyo can be detoured with a walk into Arashiyama to start and end with some temples. It's low and flat enough that it should be easy even with a bit of snow cover.

If you go a bit farther south into Kyushu, the Kirishima complex around the Ebino Plateau can have cold but clear trails. I've done the traverse from Takachihogawara to Karakuni-dake in January with no snow on the ground. Everything was just brown. You now have to detour around Shinmoedake because of the recent eruptions or just stick to one end of the trails or the other.

I've also hiked up Takadake at Mt. Aso in late December and Neko-dake in February with no snow. Both were cold but I was able to choose dates and go when it was clear. It does snow up high in both areas but I've never seen deep snow. I believe you can get to the Nakadake and Takadake trails via a south ridge trail around the crater which is now off limits. The Kyushu volcanoes are getting frisky.
