Non-driving Option in East Hokkaido 2016/4/23 13:30
Hello All / Konnichiwa!

I am going to visit Lake Akan, Lake Mashu and Lake Kussharo in October from 12th to 15th. My primary aims are hot springs and red leaves appreciation. This will be me my first time visiting East Hokkaido and I am a female who has no driving licence.

Below is the tentative list of places I am interested and my accommodation plan.

Oct 13: Takimi Bridge and Lake Onneto
Accommodation for Oct 12-13 (2 nights) : next to Lake Akan

Oct 14-15: Lake Mashu Observatory No. 1 and 3, Mt. Io , Lake Kussharo, Sunayu, Wakoto Peninsula, Bihoro Pass, "Lake Mashu Hoshikikou" activity at night

Accommodation for Oct 14 : near Kawayu Onsen Station (tentative) ; Oct 15: next to Sapporo JR Station

But if any of them should be omitted in my situation, please feel free to tell me. Thank you!

According to replies from the tourist centers, it is possible that there will be no bus from Oct 13-15 connecting the above-said places. And the rent-a-car option ( with driver included ) fee for one person is very expensive. My daily budget on this part is 6000 JPY.

Are there any suggestions or ideas to resolve the transportation issue? Like any hotel / hostels offering charged pickup service to the tourist spots?

I have been researching information online for many days and I still don't have a clue. Your valuable advice will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks a million!

I am sorry to say I can't find such services. However there are sightseeing bus service from Kushiro city.

Starting Kushiro at 8:00, they will take you to Kushiro marshland, Lake Mashu, Iou-zan, Lake Kussharo and then Lake Akan. You can drop off there and the fare from Kushiro to Akan is 3290 yen. Call them for reservation at 0154-37-2221.

For the Onneto part, you can take a trekking tour from Lake Akan.

The fare is 6300 yen. If you are the only one participant, you must add 3000 yen. For more detail e-mail at nature@marimo.or.jp.

Hope you a good luck!
