JR platform ticket

Hi,

can I use the 入場券 to visit the shinkansen platform?
Station in question would be Hakata to see the EVA 500 series.
Or would I need another ticket?

Yes,only 140Y platform ticket(入場券/nyuujou ken)
valid for 2hrs from ticket purchasing time.(not from ticket gate entering time)

But return train arr Hakata no long stay only 6 min
and not so good for photo shooting also cannot enter train as platform ticket rule.

However,this train will be slower passenger train until shinkansen yard dep 16:13
with chepest express fee 100Y(300Y total/oneway) fr Hakata to Hakata-Minami station(博多南駅)
as Hakata-Minami line(博多南線) only 9 min short traval. (except car no.1 special room)

So you can enter car no.2 by only 300Y/oneway.

Taking photos from the outside is enough for me, but nice to know that you could ride the train for at least some minutes for a great bargain price!

Do I need to buy the platform ticket at the first gate (entry of JR) or before entering the shinkansen area?

Also Shinkansen(新幹線) belonging "JR" but anyway
you can enter from JR Conventional line ticket gate first
then re-enter via Shinkansen connecting ticket gate
(乗換口/norikae-guchi or 連絡口/renraku-guchi)
by only one 140Y platform ticket no worry.

Also possible opposite way Shinkansen ticket gate first
finally Conventional line gate out via Shinkansen connecting ticket gate
even Conventional line - Shinkansen - Conventional line gate out
via Shinkansen connecting ticket gate twice within 2hrs total,too.
So if no need Conventional line area purchase at near Shinkansen ticket gate enough.

You cannot purchase platform ticket by IC card(SUGOCA/nimoca and more)
also touching at ticket gate as instead magnetic sheet ticket(need to insert slot).

Car No.1 will be front car as return train arr 16:07 but all windows covered.
