Ideas for Kansai trip 2016/4/29 11:31

I'll be traveling to Kansai in 2 days and this is what I've got so far for Kyoto, What else would you, good people, advice me to add as there's still a lot of time left on the 4th day and also on the 3rd day (no plans whatsoever for evening). Anything is welcome! The locations are in order so if you just follow them one by one you'll understand where I'll go next and next and so on.

Also, since My Maps only works with the Driving, Bycicle and Walking transportation options I couldn't find buss numbers, subway numbers or train numbers to get me around so I was curios, is there a way for me to find out what busses/trains/subways will get me from one location to another? Cause I'm afraid I'll get to Kyoto and have to ask 100 people around for transport indications on how to get from one temple to another, wasting a lot of time I believe... Is there any easy way to find how to get around using trains/busses/subway in Kyoto?

Thank you!

Gooday. Kyoto tends to be jammed full of tourists in recent years. It has really taken the fun out of it IMO. I wouldnt bother with Kiyomizudera unless you are going early in the morning or late in the day. Lunch time is a disaster. Dont expect a lot of peace along the philosopher's path either, unless you do it early.

Places that are not as infested include Uji, and closer to Kyoto itself Fushimi Inari and Tofukuji. You can catch a train to Fushimi Inari then walk back to Tofukuji, and the area around Fushimi Inari in particular is a lot of fun, pretty similar to the approach to Kiyomizudera before it became a seething mass of sweaty bodies wriggling in and out of trinket shops.

With regard to getting around use Google Maps.
Or find the way how to get there first using this guide (bus or train) then print it on paper to bring along.
Or visit the bus centre, that has a bus map with the bus route and most attractions.
Lastly is just to follow the crowds.

the link shows a map.
Not where you are going.

For four days i would
Day 1
Land, munch at Kyoto station shopping mall
Leave luggage at hotel or Kyoto station locker
Go to Kinkakuji + Ryoan-ji + Ninnanji
Night at Fushimi Inari

Day 2
Morning at Fushimi Inari
Train to Kiyomizudera
Walk to Yasaka Shrine via old streets
Lunch
Walk to Heian shrine and then Nanzenji
Walk to Ginkakuji via Honen-in, popping by Eikando

Day 3
Morning at Kitano Tenmangu
Kamo shrines
Sanzen-in and the surrounding area
Any of Day 2 you couldn't complete

Day 4
Arashiyama

If you have time on Day 1
Myoshin-ji for a large temple upon temple compound and Toei for some drama fun
Don't see how, but if Day 2 has time
Go to Gion at night
If you don't feel tired by Day 3
Night out at Osaka's Namba/Domtombori area
If you have time on Day 4
Pop by Uji in the evening for some cooler temperatures and a nice gushing river. End the day with some matcha kit kat/soba/neat.

That's better.

Day 1 makes sense and looks pretty good except the castle. It isn't a very pretty or nice castle. Osaka and himeji have their own castles and are far better.
It doesn't take an hour to see and walk kinkakuji. It is popular but the area is small and the path is a designated one road loop.
Takes about 30 min to get there from any part of the city most of them the time. Takes no more than 15 to get to
Day2
You've allocated quite a bit of time for FI. It only takes 30-60 minute to see the highlights. If going to the top of the hill and back is your interest it still wouldn't take that much time. Would use the time to have a more relax morning. Either that, or I would do FI in the evening. After a dinner a gion. Since gion is one or Two or train stations from kiyomizu/silver pavilion. Or you can do FI first thing in the morning since its 24hrs.

Day 3 and day 4
Would spend a full day in arashiyama
Would do yasaka and silver pavilion on day 2
Day 4 is to be visit Nara or Uji or to see some place you missed on an earlier day. Back up day so to speak.
The walk from kiyomizu to silver pavilion and back to gion/potoncho without considering walking into Temples would be 3 to 3.5 hours. (Philophers walk is an hour. Nanzenji to heian shrine to yasaka shrine takes 45 min. Yasaka to kiyomizu takes an hour if slopes are your enemy. Then You add break time.)
So all in all you can walk it in a day.

If you have extra time, and have not already included it in, then seeing Nara is the obvious choice. It has some of the best places in Japan - the Todaiji Temple in particular is a must see place.

In Kyoto, Fushimi Inari is one of Kyoto's best, but it's open 24/7 so you should take advantage of that, not to mention kill 2 birds with one stone by avoiding the tourist hordes and go visit in the early morning or evening.

And since you mention evening, you could try Pontocho to (maybe) catch a glimpse of a maiko or geisha (not a fake costume)
or even go wander through Kyoto Station at night - yes, it's a train station, but one of the most interesting ones you will ever see.

The best option though would be to go to Osaka. Dotonbori at night is lively and has great food, plus the night views from atop the Umeda Sky Bldg or Abeno Harukas Bldg are stunning.

You can get to Osaka in 30 minutes, and as long as you get back by midnight you're good to go.
There is truly no shortage of great places to see in the area.
