Trip to Kanazawa - Takayama

Hello!
We'll be in Hiroshima on May 30th and then want to spend 5 nights in the Kanazawa - Takayama area. Right now I have us traveling on the 30th from Hiroshima to Nara and spending the night in Nara and then going to Kanazawa next day.
My thought is 2 nights in Kanazawa and then 3 in the Takayama area. My question is - can we get from Kanazawa to the area by the rope lift? There is an onsen there where we could stay overnight and then go to Takayama the next day. But I don't want to miss Shirakawa-go either. So any suggestions for a route? Right now anything after Hiroshima can be changed.
