Autumn color in Tohoku area 2016/5/11 16:48
I plan to be in Japan in early November for autumn color. There are 2 regions where I've never been, Tohoku and Hokkaido. As I will be there in early November, I think Sendai is my choice when I checked at 'when do trees turn colors' page. I wonder if it's the good pick or it's better to go to Tokyo/Nikko/Kanazawa, just for sure.

Kindly suggest. Thank you.

Autumn color date is not fixed so too early.
Especially last year 2015 was unusual condions
1-2 weeks delayed by warmer temp continued/stayed/not finished.

So open/watch again forecast web after mid SEP.

Around Sendai area Naruko-kyo(gorge/near Naruko onsen) is the most famous.

But in Tohoku(wide) not only Naruko.

Tokyo/Nikko/Kanazawa are also good but back to first line "no exact" peak dates.
Autumn color front from North to South/East to West and higher ground to lower ground.

I would say that early November is probably already too late for Tohoku.

Last year, I was up around there in mid-October when the leaves were pretty much at their peak:

2015 was not a representative year, but I did get some nice viewing at the end of October in Sapporo before going to Aomori. By the time we visited Nikko on Nov 14th the leaves there were pretty good.

Maybe I will get a chance to see some color in Tokyo as I will spend a few days there. I will fly in and out from Tokyo. Thank you andy.

I was at Tohoku last year on end Oct to early Nov. In some area at Aomori, the leaves had past its peak color. Momijiyama at Kuroishi city still shows some blazing colors and leaves at Oirase stream has fallen. You may have better chance around Akita or Iwate prefecture. Yamagata/Yamadera already showed some colors.

Thank you Moccy. Yes the main area I plan to stay is around Sendai, will not to that north to Aomori.

Really can't wait to be there.

I was there for 2 days and there are plenty places around Sendai to explore. I went to Yamadera, Matsushima island, Ishinomaki, and Shiogama. If I had more time, I would have stayed a night at Matsushima island, visited Naruko Gorge and stayed a night, or pay a visit to Aizu Wakamatsu.
