Can i bring my iPhone 4 from Australia and buy a pre-paid card to put in 'my' phone and use in Japan?...not sure how this works etc., will the info shown on my screen be in English?, is there such a thing?, sorry, but really confused and need a phone in Japan for two weeks. Thank you.

Yes, if it's unlocked. For two weeks, you will be limited to tourist data-only plans.

Depending on the sim card you get, you may not be tied to a two week limit. There are many you can get with 2gb or 3gb data plans, which is plenty for a holiday although as Firas says, they're data only so no normal voice calls.

Thanks for the advice. I need to 'call home etc.'. I may 'hire' a phone whilst in Japan.
