Advice on Hokkaido itinerary 2016/5/24 17:42
My wife and I are planning a trip to Hokkaido in June for 10 days. We will arrive and depart from Shin Chitose. We are senior citizens and are not keen on self driving and hope to travel around by publiic transportation.
Can we get some advice on a relaxing itinerary to see the sites and local culture and it would be nice if we can stay in a ryokan for a nite or two. Thanks

Sapporo
http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2163.html
Sapporo Factory is where the first Sapporo beer brewery was located. It's now a downtown shopping mall. The Sapporo Beer Museum was a sugar beet factory before being a museum and the cook-at-your-table restaurant.

Mt. Moiwa

Take the street car to the stop close to the ropeway, then walk a bit uphill to the ropeway station and take it to the top of Mt. Moiwa for views out over the city. On a clear day, you can see as far as the next mountain range to the north, the volcanoes to the SE and over most of Sapporo.

Historical Village of Hokkaido
http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e5303.html
Buildings with significant historic architecture were moved to this park. The Aoyama's herring goten from the famous villa in Shukutsu, was moved here. It's a bus ride from either Sapporo Station or a subway and bus ride from Shin-Sapporo Station.

Otaru
http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e6700.html
A short train ride from Sapporo, Otaru is worth a couple of nights. The canal area is the big advertised attraction, but going farther to the SE through the old architecture of early Hokkaido all the way to the Music Box Museum after the end of the canal is just as interesting. A short bus ride from Otaru Station to Shukutsu is worthwhile to check out the Aoyama Villa with all its artwork and the Herring Museum up on the hill.

The Japanese go to Shukutsu to visit the aquarium but I've never been there although I've looked down on it from the cliffs above and listened to the seal show.

Furano-Biei
http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e6826.html
There are bus tours to the flower farms around Furano and Biei. Some start in Sapporo and others in Furano if you go there first. There should be something in bloom by the middle of June although the peak of the lavender bloom is in July.

Shiraoi/Noboribetsu
http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e5375.html
The Ainu Museum in Shiraoi is good for a short stop. It's a train stop before the more famous Noboribetsu Onsen Station. There is the museum and a reconstructed village next door with some crafts and dances being performed. You just have to walk the gauntlet of souvenir stores to get to the entrance. It's a short walk from the station or a very short taxi ride.
Noboribetsu is an ugly hot spring town, best for staying inside and soaking in the hot water and eating meals in your room. Some of the hotels/ryokan in the hot springs town will pick you up at the station, otherwise, it's a short bus ride up the mountain.

You could find a nice ryokan here, such as the Takinoya, but there are others as well.

Jozankei

This is another onsen town within the city limits of Sapporo but an hour bus ride south, through some mountain and rural scenery.

Farther afield are the national parks and hot springs in the center of the island.

or Hakodate, at the southern end of the island, about 4 hours by train.

For Sapporo, I would recommend Odori Park for morning stroll which is most pleasant in summer time. And then there is Sapporo Beer Museum and beside that is a Beer Garden to have some Hokkaido limited beers and Genghis Khan (mutton BBQ). The Sapporo Station itself is worth visiting, with T38 Observation Deck for a nice night view and Ramen Republic for aBe katanya lu mau mandi, kok bisa chat sih lunch/dinner. For a good range of souvenir, have a visit to Sapporo Factory.

As for Ryokan, there is a ryokan called Nakamuraya Ryokan which is just a 10 minutes walk from Sapporo Station. It comes with a considerably cheap price (around the same as hotel prices) and is more than comfortable enough for a few days stay. Of course as you can expect from a ryokan, they have onsen too.

Another city I would recommend is Hakodate, which is around 3.5 hours by train from Sapporo. The night view from Mount Hakodate is simply exceptional, try to get to the mountain top before sunset. Around 3 mins walk from Hakodate station is a morning market, which is a great place to have fresh a seafood breakfast. Fort Goryokaku is also worth visiting, while the park itself can offer a pleasant walk.

Anyway, about all those places can basically be reached by short walks or buses.
