spending money - budget 2016/7/4 15:30
Hello to all! Thanks in advance for the awesome people who will answer my question.
Is $5000 AUD enough for a 15 day spending money for 3 people in Japan? We already paid for accomodations and only going to Tokyo and Osaka, and wont be getting a JR pass.
Will this amount cover food, transport (Shinkansen from Tokyo-Osaka), city transport, entrance fees to museums, etc.?

5000 divided by 3 divided by 15 multiplied by 77 yen/AUS dollar now (you might get a bit less at actual money exchanger), that gives you about 8,500 yen per person per day. One way Tokyo - Osaka on JR Shinkansen costs about 13,000 yen, so there will be days when you need to really save on food and shopping, but it should be doable. But plan well.

You will need about $60 AUD per day per person minimum on a el-cheapo budget. Some days more, some days less.

You are looking at $15 AUD for transport, $30 for food and $15 for shrine/temple entries/donations.

Other locations will cost more to enter like aquariums, towers, theme parks, fancier eateries etc.

A full price Tokyo to Shin-Osaka reserved seat Shinkansen trip will cost about $185 AUD. There also are cheaper options available like Platt Kodama tickets. An easy google search.

I think you budget is safe. You should have nearly $100AUD per day. Food is probably the biggest thing in Japan that has the widest variance in costings. So you have a safe margin to splash a little more if you like.

Nono. I would say that accommodation is the one with the highest variance.
You can save money by
1. Eating takeaway food from convenience stores
2. Take coaches or a slower train inbetween Osaka and Tokyo
3. Plan how you want to get around the city. Osaka can be walked/cycled easily.
