East Hokkaido in December

Hi, I will be going to central Hokkaido (near Furano) to ski with my family in December and after skiing, we would like to spend about 3 or 4 days exploring Hokkaido as it will be our first visit. With a 7 year old child in tow, would it make sense to see the cranes near Kushiro and then to Shiretoko? I have been reading up and it appears the Shiretoko National Park will be closed in December, therefore I am not sure where we should head after Kushiro. Appreciate any advice. Thank you!
