Matsumoto Castle view / night view

Since I'm visiting Himeji Castle and don't have much time, I was thinking on only viewing the castle from the outside. Where is a good place to view it ?
Also is it illuminated in the evening/night (In early Nov) ?

The castle has a park with walkways around the outside of the moat if you don't pay to enter. You get good views of the entire castle from the west and south from these paths. This is the only way you can see it if you go after dark when it's illuminated as entry ends at 4:30 PM. You would have to enter to get the full front view or closer views.
