Looking for somewhere different 2016/7/25 02:23
Hi,
We plan to travel back to Japan next summer (June 2017). We will be going to Tokyo and Kyoto for sure. Hubby wants to go someplace else that we haven't seen before for a couple of nights.
I was thinking about Shimoda or Atami. Is there anyplace else that you can recommend that would be an easy commute from Tokyo, then onward to Kyoto or from Kyoto then onward to Tokyo.
Thanks.

To Sal: http://www.japan-guide.com/community/lilien/
Look at her profile.

Instead of Atami how about Ito? Has a less commercial feel to it. Can also visit the rest of the Izu Peninsular.

If not Kanazawa is an option. You can take the shinkasen from Tokyo then the limited express to Kyoto. Along the shinkansen line are places like Toyama and Nagano that I like. North is Noto Peninsular that is known for fishing and hot springs.

@ jh, sorry about that. I didn't realise she wasn't a guest.

A couple of ideas in addition to what's already suggested:
1) Shibu Onsen & Yamanouchi snow monkeys http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e6025.html
2) Kumano area, Kii Peninsula http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e4950.html

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I'll look into several of them. As for Ito, I really like that suggestion. If I don't stay in a ryokan there, are there lots of restaurant choices in the area? I hesitate to stay in ryokans again (I've stayed in several) as I don't eat poultry or fish so it's hard to find a ryokan that will accommodate my dietary requests.
Sal - I've also been to Hakone several times besides what's on my profile. I have to add that.
