Will a rail pass save money? 2016/7/31 23:29
I am getting myself so confused with this. We have flights that arrive into Osaka and out of Tokyo so don't need to go back on ourselves so I'm wondering if a pass is worthwhile given that we will be going straight from Osaka airport to Kyoto and then it can't be used for transportation in Mt Koya. I also believe there are buses for the alps section of our trip.

Our route is something like this Kyoto-Koya-Hiroshima-Kanazawa-Takayama-Kamikochi-Kawaghiko-Tokyo

Can anyone shed any light on if a rail pass is cost effective (we have 2 weeks in Japan).

Use the following link: http://www.aoimirai.net/japan/jrpass_calculator.html

Or, look up your trips on Hyperdia (hyperdia.com/en), add up the fares and compare the total cost to the cost of a pass.

For a short version of cost of different journeys I have a list at http://japancustomtours.co.nz/railpass.htm

A seven day pass wouldn't be long enough, and a 14 day pass wouldn't pay itself off.
