Is it worth to buy Kansai Thru Pass? 2016/8/15 10:37
Hi, I'll be travelling to Japan at the end of this month my trip will include:

Day 1: Kansai Airport to Osaka to Nara
Day 2: Osaka to Koyasan
Day 3: Osaka to Kyoto

I was thinking to purchase Kansai Thru Pass but I am not sure if it is worth it because I have read somewhere that I still need to pay additional fees if I use certain lines. Where can I check how much is the additional fees?

Day 1: Kansai Airport to Osaka to Nara

Do you mean Osaka as JR Osaka or Umeda? Osaka is rather wide area including Kansai Airport by itself, Namba, Tennoji etc. Do you need to go to a specific place in Osaka or you just want to go to Nara (if you use non-JR lines, it should be Kintetsu-nara). Don't you need to go back to somewhere in Osaka?

If you don't need to stop at specific place in Osaka and just want to go to Kintetsu Nara, it should be like:

1480-1720 yen.

If you need do go back to Osaka (Umeda), it should be

800 yen.

Day 2: Osaka to Koyasan

Do you need to come back to Osaka? I assume you will start from Umeda and come back.

1500 yen x 2 + bus fares in Koyasan, around 600 yen = 3600 yen

Day 3: Osaka to Kyoto

I assume you will come back to Osaka.

400 x 2 + (you will use non-JR lines and buses in Kyoto, maybe 1000 yen) = 1800 yen.

Total 1480+800+3600+1800=7680 yen.

So, I think the pass will pay off, but it entirely depends on your actual itinerary.

I am sorry. What I meant was Umeda because I will be staying at a hotel near to Shin Imamiya Station. And one more thing does each station have express and non-express train and I can use any train station (except for the JR because I am not gonna use JR Pass) ? Or certain airlines have certain type of train?

What I meant was Umeda because I will be staying at a hotel near to Shin Imamiya Station.

Do you mean Shin-Imamiya, not JR Osaka (Umeda)? JR and Nankai have Shin-Imamiya station which are very close to each other. However, Osaka-namba (Kintetsu) to Namba (Naikai) is somewhat distant, and maybe due to this situation, hyperdia doesn't show Nankai Shin-imamiya.

As you see it shows Dobutsuenmae subway station and then walk.

Of course, if you use JR, hyperdia shows transfer at Tsuruhashi to JR train. In this case you will pay additional 160 yen.

Further you can go via Osaka-namba-Namba(Nankai) to Shinimamiya.

And one more thing does each station have express and non-express train and I can use any train station (except for the JR because I am not gonna use JR Pass) ? Or certain airlines have certain type of train?

I guess your question is whether all type of trains stop at Shinimamiya. As for Nankai Shinimamiya station, all Nankai trains (going to Koyasan) stop there. As for JR Shinimamiya station, Limited express trains don't stop. However, you will not use Limited express trains even if you take JR from Tsuruhashi to Shinimamiya, there is no Limited express, so you don't need to worry about it.

Before getting on the train you should search on Hyperdia to find appropriate trains.
