Kyushu 2016/8/25 08:45
I would like to travel Kyushu via train. Can you sleep on the train?
Or you have to book hotel for each night? I would like to spend maybe 3 nights. I would be arriving in Fukuoka.

Distances are not that long - in fact by bullet train you could get from Kokura to Kagoshima-chuo in less than 2 hours - so forget about some sleeper train.

Since you mention 3 nights, I suggest you get a JR Northern Kyushu Rail Pass and stick with northern Kyushu. You won't see even half of what area offers in 3 days though.

In terms of history and varied points of interest, Nagasaki is really the most interesting city on the island. It is worth a couple days to see the city, and another day to see areas nearby like Shimabara/Unzen or whatever interests you. Gunkanjima, while it takes 3 hours, will blow your mind.

For Fukuoka, there are many open parks, shopping, seaside historical areas, and urban neon. See this site as an intro guide:

There are also many useful videos to give you a preview:

Oita has some nice sites too. There is Yufuin, and Beppu is famous for its hot springs also, plus Hells Tour and nearby monkey park & aquarium.

Kumamoto suffered some severe damage in an earthquake, but is slowly picking up the pieces. It has some very good places to see though.

Has been no sleeper trains in Kyushu for some time. Cannot remember that last time a blue train went to Kumamoto.

Sleep in hotel.

Steam Locomotive (SL) Hitoyoshi & JR Kyushu Pass 2016/8/26 07:04
Related to JR Kyushu Pass:
Does anybody know if JR Kyushu Pass (All Kyushu Area Pass) includes rides on SL Hitoyoshi (between Kumamoto and Hitoyoshi)?
