Bitchu Matsuyama's sea of cloud 2016/8/26 15:12
Hi all, how to access the observation point to view the sea of cloud of Bitchu Matsuyama castle? Do I need to stay nearby or I can be in time for trip from Okayama? (may reach there almost 8am)

Thank you.

Put in Okayama, put in Matsuyama, put in day you want to travel and time you wanna arrive.

hakata14, does Hyperdia tell you how to get to the observation point? I didn't think so.

Look at a map? Are adults unintelligent and require others to do their homework? I don't think so.

It's a sort of misleading comment, because Matsuyama Station (located in Ehime) is irrelevant to Bitchu-Matsuyama Castle.

The link to this website only shows how to get to the castle. Maybe there's a vantage point that is oft used for photos. Maybe those are taken from a helicopter. I don't know. The OP doesn't know. If you're not certain if there is a vantage point or not, posting condescending remarks does no one any good.

Moccy,

It's fairly remote. You'll need a car. Possibly doable with a taxi but you'll want the taxi to wait for you or come back and get you at a set time. The pictures you are looking at are taken from just off the road on another mountain top.

Here it is on Google Maps
https://goo.gl/maps/Qf9kHxC8vt92

The red pin on the map is the spot where the pictures are taken from and Bitchu-Matsuyama castle is to the left.

If you don't rent a car you'll have to take the train to Bitchu Takahashi Station and then a 30 minute cab ride out to the picture spot. Best time is early morning (by 8am) fall to winter.

To check train times use Hyperdia http://www.hyperdia.com/
Enter your starting station, in your case you wrote Okayama, and then enter your destination station BitchuTakahashi. Then enter the date and time you wish to travel, click Search and you'll get a schedule of trains departing Okayama and when they arrive in BitchuTakahashi.

To get there for about 8am you'll probably have to leave Okayama station at about 6:30 am taking into account it's about a 30 - 40 minute train ride (depending on which train you take) and then about a 30 minute taxi ride to the picture spot.

Here are two additional places for the "Sea of Clouds" viewing. One is one Shikoku Island, near Kochi, and the other is in Kyushu, near Takamatsu:

I liked the images that showed the island with buildings "rising from the sea". I think that would be wonderful to photograph. The two places that I gave do not have this effect.

Thank you for all of the informative feedback.

Indeed I was looking at how to access the observatory deck at the opposite mountain of the castle, which looks like located by the road side. I could not get information whether there is any shuttle service from the station, nearby accommodation, or taxi for return trip.

@curious and NBGY:
Thank you for sharing the detail information. You're right, getting there from the station can be arranged but returning (catching a taxi) may be tough, especially since I'm not well-conversant in Japanese.

Additionally I found this link but not sure if the service is still going.

@ebaychucky311:
Indeed the effect of having the castle emerged from the sea of cloud is stunning and I wish to witness it. However from the website shared by NBGY, the castle looks quite tiny that requires long zoom lens to obtain good shot of the castle.

Great find!

I emailed them and asked and the service will start again in October. This will solve your issue of getting to the picture spot and back.

Hello,
Sorry for reviving the thread. I found some resources on the transportation to the viewing platform, but the translation is a bit off.

From the translation, it seems there are bus running on weekend, shared taxi 500 yen one way, and tourist bus (1500 yen for 70 minutes trip). I'm not very clear on the arrangement of the bus and tourist bus, e.g. the timing, pickup point, etc.

May I ask some help to understand the available option?

Thank you very much.
