Alpine route & Kurobe Gorge 2016/9/25 23:49
Hi, please advise if below itinerary is doable and if it is too hectic.
Day 1: 8.00am depart Nagoya to Takayama
12.30pm bus to Shirakawa-go
3.00pm bus back to Takayama
overnight at Takayama
Day 2: 8.00am depart from Takayama to Kurobe Gorge
overnight at Toyoma
(by the time we arrive at Kurobe Gorge it would be late morning; do we have enough time to do the sightseeing? Maybe we should cancel this from the itinerary?)
Day 3: 8.00am depart for Tateyama Alpine route
overnight at Murodo
(should we stay two nights along the Alpine route instead of rushing to Kurobe Gorge?)
Day 4: 11am depart for Matsumoto
overnight at Matsumoto
Day 5: 3pm depart for Nagoya
Will be using the Alpine-Takayama-Matsumoto pass.
Thanks for helping.

Knowing the exact dates of travel will enable more solid suggestion such as the crowd condition. In general a day trip to Kurobe Gorge from Toyama should be OK. For the Alpine Route unless you are after some serious hiking one night stay should also be fine.

Hi William, thanks for the quick response.
12 Oct Arriving Nagoya on 12 Oct evening.
13 Oct Depart for Takayama
14 Oct Depart for Toyoma and hope to proceed to Kurobe Gorge on the same day. This is where I hope to have some advice as by the time I arrive at Kurobe Gorge Railway station to begin the sightseeing journey it would be around 1pm. Wonder if it is too much of a rush. Would I be better off to proceed to the Alpine route instead or to stay over in Toyoma?
15 Oct Depart for Alpine route; tentatively booked accommodation at Omachi as not very sure which area is best. Any better suggestion? Hope to do one short hike along the easy trails in Murodo for the experiene.
16 Oct Depart for Matsumoto
17 Oct Depart for Nagoya
Your advice is greatly appreaciated.

Instead of returning to Takayama, it would be better if you could overnight at either Toyama or Unazuki-onsen, and ready to do the Kurobe Gorge early the next morning .

A bit tight but still feasible to cover Kurobe Gorge in an afternoon. The scenic one-way train ride between Unazuki and Keyakidaira is about 75-80 min. The walk from Keyakidaira down to Sarutobikyo Gorge is about 10 min.

Another option is to stay the night in Toyama on Oct 14, do Kurobe Gorge early morning on Oct 15 and go on the Alpine Route in the afternoon bedding down in Murodo. On Oct 16 trek around in Murodo area before continuing eastward on the Alpine Route and ending the day in Matsumoto, no need to stay the night in Shinano-Omachi.

On a tight schedule if you can cover Kurobe Gorge on Oct 14, the whole Alpine Route can be done on Oct 15 without staying overnight – start early in Toyama and bed down late in Matsumoto.

Another thing to think about is to save Kurobe Gorge for a better time! The scenic train ride is best done during autumn foliage season which starts around late Oct and is best during early Nov. Mid Oct is too early and the scenery would not be that spectacular.
