Confused on which pass is good 2016/10/2 17:17
I have been surfing the net on various type of passes to purchase so that my mum & I can travel around Osaka - Kyoto - Nara easily.
However, I'm still very confused on which passes is/are good for us when traveling to Osaka - Kyoto - Nara & we will be there for about 6 - 8 days.

Please help me as (50/yrs above) will be bringing a 70/yrs old lady around.

You will need to give more details about your planned itinerary. Of course, the simplest solution will be to just buy an IC card and use it, and if you are just going to Osaka, Kyoto and Nara, you can't save all that much with a rail pass anyway.

If you are just going to those locations. Since you have little travel per day. Any passes will be over valued. Just get a IC travel card.

It's actually not easy to make a rail pass for just within the main Kansai cities pay off. However, with the amount of time you plan to spend there, you could see Himeji as a day trip, which has Japan's finest castle. The Kokoen Garden next door is also quite relaxing.

In that event, a one day Kansai Area Pass would serve you quite well.

Thank you all for your replies. Itinerary will be :

1st day - check in hotel first - that will be after 5pm
2nd day - Tour around Osaka
3rd day - Travel to Nikko for day trip
4th day - Travel to Kyoto for day trip
5th day - Travel to Nara for day trip
6th day - Stay in Osaka or Travel to Tokyo or Kyoto for day trip
7th & 8th day - Stay in Osaka & return home

If my itinerary is not a good one, please help me change it. Thanks.

Re: Confused on which pass is good 2016/10/3 23:20
Skip Nikko. Skip Tokyo. They are both 4+ hour Shinkansen rides away, and are not Kansai. Spend 3 days in Kyoto minimum. Whether you stay half your time in Osaka and half in Kyoto, or base in Osaka for the whole trip, could change the pass situation, so that's something to consider. If you want to add an extra place, then as Himeji as recommended above.

If you really have to go to Nikko and Tokyo, then reorganizing your entire trip would make a 7 day national JR pass pay off probably, but that doesn't seem like it was your intention re your original post.

The above revision is much better and more realistic.

But for your 7th day, add it to Kyoto. You could spend months there and not see it all. Kyoto needs a lot more attention than just one day.

Re: Confused on which pass is good 2016/10/4 17:18
Yes, I would go three days in a row to Kyoto.

So
1st Day: Osaka
2nd Day: Osaka
3rd-5th Day: Kyoto
6th Day: Nara
7th Day: Himeji (spend the afternoon in Osaka if you didn't see everything on the 2nd day)
8th Day: Osaka/home

Prioritize the most interesting things for you in each city, so if you get tired/need a break, you've seen the stuff you wanted to see most already. You could be flexible too, for example, if you feel like you've seen enough of the highlights of Kyoto in 2 1/2 days, then spend the last afternoon in Osaka, etc.

Hey there,

For your current plan, you can consider Kansai Thru pass.

Thanks - Firas, hakata 14, Ken, Murny, scarreddragon, lnkhang

My final itinerary amendment :
1st day - check in hotel in Osaka first - that will be after 5pm
2nd day - Tour around Osaka
3rd day - Travel to Kyoto for day trip
4th day - Travel to Nara for day trip
5th day - Travel to Himeji for day trip
6th day - Travel to Kyoto for day trip
7th day - Travel to Kyoto for day trip
8th day - Stay in Osaka & return home

As suggest by Inkhang, I should get Kansai Thru pass. Can I get the pass from KIX airport upon arrival?
