Aomori travel 2016/10/4 05:55
Hi, so I have 1 day of travel in the Shimokita peninsula area, which needs to end in Hachinohe for the night. Will be traveling by car, so not bound to train lines. The plan currently is to start from Mutsu the night before, hit up Osorezan area (fairly early, will probably leave Mutsu by 7am), then up to Oomazaki for an early lunch. The question is what to do between the early lunch (probably roughly 10:00~10:30) and the 6~6:30pm arrival time in Hachinohe.

The main question here I guess is, 1) is Hotokegaura worth going if you don't plan on taking the boat? Basically, am I going to be able to see the sights if I'm just walking down on the shimokita peninsula side?

2) What are some places worth checking out between either Oomazaki and Hachinohe (or hotokegaura & hachinohe) that doesn't require a huge detour? I could use a spot or two to break up the ~3 hour drive.

Thanks!

This site suggests the followings in Shimokita.
http://simokita.org/sight/

Osorezan
Ooma
Hotokegaura
Shiriyazaki
Shimofuro Onsen
Yagen Onsen
Mutsu
Oominato
Oohata
Kawauchi
Wakinosawa
Sai
Higashidoori
Yokohama

They estimate 8h20m to go around the top four, down to Shiriyazaki.

Hotokegaura has a steep promenade down to the site, taking 20 min.

well, the stairs looks steep but at least it's not rocky/dirt road. I will have basically 5 60+ year olds with me, but they are all relatively healthy enough to walk up some stairs.. I think, haha.

Is there anything else between say.. Shiriyazaki and Hachinohe that might be worth stopping by chance?

I don't know when you intend to travel, but remember Osorezan in closed to public between 1/11 and 30/04.

You can go to Yagen valley afterwards and enjoy the onsen.

On that day, 10/31/2016, you might be better to consider to take a boat at Hotokegaura. Low tide (-54cm) is after 21:00. You might have to walk into the water, even in the second low tide (-14cm) around 9:00. Waves could higher than 14cm.

Shiriyazaki is famous for its 120 year old lighthouse and 40 horses, Kandachime, while Hachinohe is one of the three biggest cities in Aomori prefecture; Aomori, Hachinohe, and Hirosaki. So, you could take a rather long time in Hachinohe. Especially, you are to be there in a weekend.

The above tide values are for Shimokita, but it seems the tendency is the same for Ooma. Visit Hotokegaura around 9 am, in case of stairs..
