Driving around hokkaido in december? 2016/10/5 07:14
Will be thr in 4/12/16, planned to tent a wagon for 6 pax to drive around, to Otaru & Hakodate? Will be difficult to drive in winter season without any winter driving experience? How is the weather and daylight hours during that period?
Thanks!!

"planned to tent a wagon" means "with tent"? (really?)
or just typo "rent" a wagon?

Anyway, that period you can see snow around usual already.
But car road covered by deep snow/ice is not fixed depends on weather.
Coldest area "Kucchan(btw Otararu and Hakodate)" will be around "0/zero degree" usual.
Snow is no different "ice" so when over 0 still water(liquid)
but under 0 will be ice especially until minus 5 is unstable very dangerous by water on ice.

(Left image is best if iced, but Right is no gripped = will be slipping easier)

So if snow fall and no over 0/max temp forecast NO recommend.
If few snow and over 0/max melting a bit faster road conditions will be just all "wet".
(Don't forget slow down at long down slope and always blind part)

Winter Hokkaido 4WD car is the best for 1st timer.
All rent a car wearing snow tires no worry.

If you have been "drifting" and "counter steer(ing) = opposite way handling" contorol well no worry.

But heavy weight wagon slipping point higher but don't over speed rough accel/brake work.
On the snow/ice braking to stop distance will be about x8 to 10 longer than usual fr 40km/h.
