Sunrise Izumo/Seto reservation 2016/10/28 07:13
Hi,
I was trying to look at the page

www.web-sanin.jp/sight/time/vacant/jr.htm

But it is not available anymore it seems. I was looking for questions on reservation on the Sunrise Izumo/Seto night train and found the link.

Is there no way to find out about seating in the train?

Will it be discontinued maybe?

Is it really hard getting tickets to it? Any time when the ticket sale is not so tough?

Before arriving in Japan we thought it was impossible to get them, as we were travelling during the golden week holiday this year. Surprisingly we got the tickets.

Oh so the page was discontinued, makes sense..

Thank you for this information, I appreciate it very much.

There are no chance the Sunrise night train might be discontinued aswell? Are there any seasonal journeys by night train still going on? Or maybe I should not bother, considering the sale if tickets would probably be done before I ever get through to call them, haha...

I didnt know they were mailing tickets though, but I guess no international mail. Perhaps send it to my planned hotel?

I travelled on the Sunrise Izumo about midway through a half-month trip. I tried to reserve my tickets at the airport railway station immediately after landing in Japan (over a week before the actual rail journey) - no luck initially but another attempt on the same day at Kyōto Station was successful. Possibly a last-minute cancellation or something along those lines.

https://withinstrikingdistance.wordpress.com/2016/08/23/rail-report-to...

I was, however, chasing after the most expensive type of room on the train, so perhaps there was slightly less demand on that end of the scale. Competition for the cheaper (or, in the case of JR Pass holders, free) nobi nobi seats is undoubtedly much fiercer.

Cheers.

There is currently no talk of discontinuing the Sunrise Izumo/Seto. And, yes, a couple of seasonzl nigh trains still exist as well.

I reserved my tickets 4 weeks prior to the departure date, and initially went for nobi-nobi seats with my JR pass. However, on the departure day we found that nobi-nobi seats were going to be "bone breaking" ; I immediately spoke to a conductor and requested a sleeper rooms. Surprisingly, after additional payments, got 2 rooms without any issue.
Expect the unexpected!

Re: Sunrise Izumo/Seto reservation 2016/10/29 16:52
Reserving a nobi-nobi seat one month out normally isn't a problem. But tourist/visitors don't have the ability to reserve one month out. Which is why you hear it is difficult to get these from tourists/visitors.

Private rooms don't normally book out (due to higher costs) unless there is a holiday close to the travel day.

I wont really be aiming for the nobi nobi, I feel it will be too hard on my back. Anyway, I will give it a try once I arrive in Japan. Thank you for the information.

Johnny,
I went by Sunrise Izumo from Izumo to Tokyo, said to be the less busy at the time I were travelling, still I travelled by the Koyo period of the year so I expected the train to be full.

I got my tickets through a travel agency, which however cost me probably 30 % more than the regular price. I used my JR Pass though, as I also had to change departure day b/c of a typhoon. Was refunded on the train fee,not the berth fee though.

But on the train I found many berth doors still to be open, meaning it was not really that booked out as expected.

Give it a go and be prepared to rearrange a little if you really urge to go by night train.

If you ever take the train, do not miss the shower; imo, it is the most interesting and unique part of the adventure.
320‰~ for 6 mins, everything is provided except the towel .

I remember they selling commemorial towels at the konbini at ground floor in Izumoshi station, if you are going from there. Dont remember the name though but I think it was not the regular Lawson or Family Mart.

Oh, dont forget to get something to eat before leaving since there unfortunately are no reastaurants on board. I don't think you get much time in Okayama either, right?
