An IC card - a reloadable public transport card. In the Kansai area, the local IC card is the ICOCA. You can purchase it from machines at stations.

The JR Pass is for long-distance travel, not local travel.

Take the subway to Umeda/Osaka Station (180 yen to be paid in cash or by IC card). From Osaka Station, the Japan Rail Pass can be used on JR trains to Universal City Station.

If fine/warm day, walk until Awaza stn about 10min no hard slope.

Then take subway and finally JR train.

No recommend via Umeda(subway)/Osaka(JR) transfer.
Undergroud passege like a maze.

(Midosuji line to JR is just not hardest route)

No need Japan Rail Pass. (already answered above)
Buy ICOCA(IC card/no discount but esiest use also e-money function for shopping) at KIX(or other JR-West stn/Hommachi is not)
or discount pass for tourist/visitors.
