Private outdoor hot spring? 2017/1/16 14:02
Hi,

I am traveling to Japan with my wife for the first week of Feb. I want to stay in a luxury ryokan with a private outdoor onsen (for only both of us). It would be nice if its close to Tokyo or Kyoto (2 or 3 hours by train) and my budget is about 1000$ per night.

Private outdoor hot spring is

If navigating a site in Japanese is too overwhelming, this English site might be easier for you: http://selected-ryokan.com/

I know there is a traditional Japan outdoor onsen for families in Kyoto, it called Rotenburo. You can check its info.
Or you can search all onsen around you on Tourank app after you arrive at Japan. It will show you all nearby attractions and facilities.

If you have that budget, and haven't stayed at many/any ryokans before, I would be seriously tempted to make the budget cover two nights....the first one in a cheap ryokan and the second in a really nice one.

Having the contrast, IMHO, will make you appreciate both of them more. You will have a better understanding of the "rituals" of staying in an onsen ryokan and be able to see the small touches that make an expensive place expensive.

If the first place I ever stayed in was super-expensive, I really don't think I'd get anywhere close to appreciating it. It would be lovely, but I wouldn't be getting value for my cash.

In fact, even now after dozens of stays in ryokans of different price brackets, I'm sure a lot of the finer touches pass me by. For instance, I have nothing more than a totally superficial appreciation of Japanese scrolls, flower arrangements, pottery, etc, and in many ways these are the sort of things that make expensive places expensive.

Ochiairou Murakami has a room with a private outdoor hot spring. This ryokan is cultural heritage and you can see amazing craftsmanships in the ryokan. You may join the mini tour of the ryokan after breakfast.
