Yamaguchi-ken and Taneda Santoka 2017/1/17 14:35
I am obsessed with the haiku poet Taneda Santoka. I want to go to Yamaguchi prefecture to learn more about him, but it is hard to find information about what Taneda Santoka attractions they have there. All I know of is a tiny, unmanned museum and a small statue at Shin-Yamaguchi station. Are there any other things I can do, see or buy related to Taneda Santoka in Yamaguchi? I emailed the tourism office months ago but they haven't replied.

UPDATE: I just found out about Issa-An in Matsuyama, Ehime, as well as a small museum dedicated to him in Yunohira, Oita. Are there any more places like this scattered across southern Japan? It doesn't have to be in Yamaguchi.

One of his former residences, Gochuan (‘´’†ˆÁ) is a short walk from Shin-Yamaguchi Station:

There is a monument in Hofu where his childhood home once stood:

Kawatana Onsen (in Shimonoseki) was a favorite of his. There seem to be a few sites in addition to the hot springs related to him:

Thank you everyone! I really appreciate this information. It's hard to find much English information on where to go. I also found the locations of his tombstone and a sake brewery he used to work in. Does anyone know which temple he lived in when he became a monk?

At the time he was living in Kumamoto, after nearly being ran over by the tram he was taken to Hōon-ji Temple in Kumamoto (ŒF–{Žs•ñ‰¶Ž›) and then became a monk there. So you might want to add Kumamoto to your Kyushu trip going a bit further south than Saga.
