Hakone Free Pass for One Way

Hi There,
Just wanting some insight on whether to buy the hakone free pass or just pay one way.
We are going from Shinjuku to Hakone then onto Kyoto and plan to do the full round course in Hakone. I'm not sure whether it would be a good idea to buy the free pass in Shinjuku and just loose the return trip from Hakone back to Shinjuku or wait until I get to Hakone-Yumato and buy the pass from the ticketing machine?
Any advice would be appreciated!

Buy a one way ticket to Odawara station. Then get the 4000 yen hakone free pass version at Odawara.
