Hi,
UK citizen.
What are the procedures for a 90 day extension? Particularly the following points.
* Best time to renew before your status expires? I.e.. How long is the turnaround? Same day? Couple of days or a few weeks?
* Are itinerary, finances and return ticket crucial? What proof is needed for finances?

UK gets a standard 90 days temp visa on entry, you need to have a valid reason to extend for further day, and you might not get another 90 days, could be less. From previous experience, you can just leave to Korea for a few days and return back to Japan, and your visa will be extended for another 90 days, but this option may not always work, as I heard get only 30 days.
Temp visa could takes weeks and must be applied before your current one expires.
