People tend to have the impression that summer in Japan is ALWAYS humid. I guess humans only remember the hard part of life. But I feel that July in the cities you mentioned are generally dry. Well, maybe not as dry as western Europe (I've never been to New Zealand), but if you stay in the shade it's quite comfortable.
The toughest part is only a couple of weeks in mid-late August. There are nights that can be extremely humid, harsh heat with nearly no place to hide from, and lots of mosquitoes.
I do agree, however, that the rainy season continues up to mid July. And then on July 20th, the beaches open to swimmers, schools go on vacation, and the days will be dry and sunny.
It is indeed harsh at big traffic crossings where you need to cross the street or wait during a red signal with no trees around to shelter you. These crossings are more common in the city centers where the nicer hotels and touristic spots are. But it's more comfy under tree-lined sidewalks and gardens.
Yet, carry a light cardigan or large shawl to avoid harsh air-conditioning, as well as a portable umbrella that you can buy anywhere in Japan. By the way, rainy days in summer in Japan are still hot, so "hot" and "rainy" don't contradict with each other.

The rainy season (tsuyu) typically ends in the first half of July. It is hot (30 degree till 35 degree) and extremely humid in most of Japan, just standing outdoors can make you sweat.

I disagree with UCO., but that is my opinion. It is not the warmth that is the issue but the humidity which is high in July and August. In my home country 35 degrees really feels different than the 35 degrees here in Japan.
Even having shadow will not change that feeling. Just bring a lot of water if you go travel and comfortable cotton clothes.
When my daughter is free in summer holiday in Japan, we also travel but just take good care not to get a heatstroke or dehydration.
Summer in Japan as some nice festivals although and in Kyoto there is a lot to do.

Just bring a lot of water
You should make sure you take salt (and some sugar if possible), too, if you sweat a lot. It can be dangerous to keep sweating and then drink a huge amount of plain water, because it lowers the salt percentage of your body. The so-called "sports drinks" like Gatorade or Pocari Sweat are ideal when trying to regain what you lost from sweating.

I'm from the Gold Coast Queensland and I tend to think that Japan summers are far worse than anything we get. After all, we don't tend to get heat related deaths whereas there have been a number in Japan during the heatwaves. It gets so that you dont want to leave your room during the day and you are changing your clothes 3 times a day.
That said, Kyoto and Tokyo seem to be worse than anywhere else I've stayed in summer.
