10D Hokkaido early July 2017/6/24 03:12
Hi, understand it's very late in the day to be booking accommodations with 2 weeks left, so would be grateful for any comments on the itinerary below. We are 2 persons, and will NOT be driving, so will be taking public transport all the way. Will be flying into Asahikawa, and flying out of Hakodate.

Appreciate any comments at all on whether the itinerary below is feasible, especially in relation to time and costs.

First 4 nights in Asahikawa (accommodations in Biel/Furano seem to have run out, or are extremely expensive now)

Days 1 -2
- Daisetsuzan National Park, Kurodake Ropeway
- interested in scenery / short walks (Qn: how easy it is to get around without a car?)

Day 3: Biel (Shikisai-no-oka, blue pond)
Day 4: Furano (Farm Tomita, Furano Marche, Furano Cheese Factory)

Days 5 to 7 (3 nights in Sapporo)

Day 5: Asahikawa to Sapporo: Shiroi Koibito Park, Sapporo Jyogai Market, Hokkaido Shrine
Day 6: Susukino, Odori Park, Tanukikoji, Nijo Market, Sapporo Beer Museum
Day 7: Otaru (Canal, music box museum, kitachi glass, sankaku market, fruit picking at Yamamoto Fruits Farm or Yoichi Tourist Farm or Cherry Mountain Farm)

Day 8: Sapporo to Noboribetsu: Noboribetsu Ropeway, Lake Toya. Night in Noboribetsu
(Qn: it is possible to visit Lake Toya in a day, purely by public transport?)

Day 9: Noboribetsu to Hakodate: Hakodate Morning Market, Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse, Motomachi, Mt. Hakodate Ropeway. Night in Hakodate

Day 10: Fort Goryokaku, depart in the evening.

Many thanks in advance!!

This is the Golden Course, isn't it? I would like to have started from Hakodate. Lavenders would be in a peak in mid-July. Anyway, it is good to avoid backtracking by open-jaw flights. http://www.kamifurano.jp/exlang/motherland-of-lavender/flowering-seaso...
http://nakafukanko.com/en/event/event-28

This is a map for bus stops and routes. Bus and also train frequencies do not matter as far as you are traveling among the three largest cities in Hokkaido; Sapporo, Asahikawa, and Hakodate. In that sense, moving between Lake Toya and Noboribetsu is easy. Sounkyo has fewer buses.

Daytime is more than 15 hours, but the sunrise is around 4:00 in Sapporo in July. It would be better to utilize the early mornings efficiently. Walk in nature, park, and to a shrine. Most markets open early.

Daisetsuzan National Park
Kurodake Ropeway (600-1800)
Blue Pond
Farm Tomita (24 hours, houses: 830-1800)
Hokkaido Shrine (600-1700)
Sapporo Jogai Market (600-1700)
Odori Park
Nijo Market (700-1800)
Otaru Sankaku Market (600-1700)
Lake Toya
Hakodate Morning Market (500-1400)

These suggest staying in the followings.

Asahidake
Sounkyo
Biei/Shirogane
Furano
Sapporo
Otaru
Lake Toya
Hakodate

On the other hand, some are better at night.

Susukino
Sapporo Beer Museum
Otaru Canal
Noboribetsu Onsen
Mt. Hakodate Ropeway

Similarly, following sites are night candidates.

Sapporo
Otaru
Noboribetsu
Hakodate

I do not find any major faults in your itinerary. However, with your departure from Hakodate in the evening, here is my thought. I constructed this from the ending.

D1 (Airport - Asahidake), Daisetsuzan National Park/Asahidake Ropeway, (Asahidake - Sounkyo), (Sounkyo)
D2 Kurodake Ropeway, ..., (Sounkyo - Shirogane)
D3 Blue Pond, Shikisai-no-Oka, ..., (Shirogane - Furano), (Furano)
D4 Farm Tomita, Furano Marche, Furano Cheese Factory, (Furano - Otaru), Canal, (Otaru)

D7 Nijo Market, Odori Park, Tanukikoji, ..., (Sapporo - Noboribetsu), (Noboribetsu)
D8 Noboribetsu Ropeway, ..., (Noboribetsu - Lake Toya), (Lake Toya)
D9 Lake Toya, ..., (Lake Toya - Hakodate), Mt. Hakodate Ropeway, (Hakodate)
D10 Hakodate Morning Market, Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse, Motomachi, Fort Goryokaku, (Hakodate - Airport)

Considering the difficulties to get accommodations in Biei and Furano, here is an update.

D1 (Airport - Asahidake), Daisetsuzan National Park/Asahidake Ropeway, (Asahidake - Sounkyo), (Sounkyo)
D2 Kurodake Ropeway, ..., (Sounkyo - Asahikawa)

D10 Hakodate Morning Market, Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse, Motomachi, Fort Goryokaku, (Hakodate - Airport)

There is a direct bus from Asahikawa Airport to Asahidake Ropeway.

In Sounkyo, Kurodake is by Sounkyo Ropeway. Walkway of Momijidani is on foot. Oobako, and Waterfalls of Ginga/Meteor by bus. This bus is not frequent enough. I might walk to get enough time to enjoy there. There is a promenade from Sounkyo. The bus for a return. Another bus for Ginsendai is for a whole day hiking, not for a short walk.

Ther is a bus to Blue Pond, but not to Shikisai-no-Oka. Shikisai no Oka is a 26-min (2.0 km) walk from JR Bibaushi. You may consider a tour bus or a bicycle.

Furano Cheese Factory is far from JR Furano. 5-sen is the nearest bus stop. But only three buses per day for the Goryo line.
http://www.furanobus.jp/rosen/index.html
Goryo 4-sen is the second nearest.
More buses, but a 20-min (1.7 km) walk.

So, maybe by a bicycle or a tour bus.

Fruit picking is better in the morning. Otherwise, only the leftovers of the day. Yamamoto Sightseeing Orchard needs a 49-min (3.8 km) walk from JR Yoichi. On June 19, they said they would start strawberry picking on June 23. The fee for a picking is 1100 yen. If you make a reservation, they could serve a meal such as Jingisukan.

http://www.fruits-yamamoto.net/english.html
http://www.oksfood.com/jp/grill/jingisukan.html

Cherry Mountain also needs a 38-min (2.7 km) walk from JR Niki. They started cherry picking on Jun 24 this year. The fee is 1300 yen but a 10% discount ticket on the net. Opening hours is 800-1700. Similar meals could be served in 1100-1300. No reservations are necessary. At 1130 on Jul 9, a Ninja show will be held.

Yoichi Tourist Farm is a league of farms. Yoichi and Niki is a major site of fruit picking in Hokkaido. There should be many farms even along the bus route. One of such is Apple House. It is a one-minute (120-meter) walk from Inazono bus stop. But by rather few buses. So, a 27-min (2.3 km) walk from JR Niki. On Jun 23, they said they would start cherry picking on July 1. The fee is 1100 yen, but a 200 yen discount would be applied if you said that you saw their website. Opening hours is 900-1700.

There is one direct bus per day from Sapporo to Noboribetsu. I intend to use that, but there are frequent buses between JR Noboribetsu and Noboribetsu Onsen. Some hotels run direct shuttle buses from Sapporo, not by Donan bus.

There are many Onsens. If possible, I might skip staying in Asahikawa. I would take no breakfast rooms in cities; Otaru, Sapporo, and Hakodate. Breakfasts in markets there. Other nights at country sides, namely Onsens, to enjoy a morning walk in a fresh air.

Re: 10D Hokkaido early July 2017/6/28 03:42
Extremely grateful for your very detailed and helpful comments. I have moved my flights to end July now, because there are really no accommodations available in early July. I will look through your comments in detail later on, but right now, for purposes of booking accommodations, I have looked at your proposed itinerary, and have tried looking for accommodations in either Asahidake or Sounkyo, but it seems like there are very few left for my dates, and are very expensive.

My question is whether it would be alright to stay D1 to D5 in Asahikawa, and take day trips out to Asahidake and Sounkyo (won't have to lug heavy luggage all the way)? If I really had to choose one place to splurge for a night, would you recommend Asahidake or Sounkyo?

D 1: flight arrive in Asahikawa at 7.30pm (will be staying the night in Asahikawa as it is too late to move)
D 2: Daisetsuzan National Park/Asahidake Ropeway (night in Asahikawa or Asahidake)
D 3: Kurodake Ropeway (night in Asahikawa or Sounkyo)
D 4: Asahikawa - Biei, Blue Pond, Shikisai-no-Oka (Asahikawa)
D 5: Asahikawa - Furano, Farm Tomita, Furano Marche, Furano Cheese Factory, (Asahikawa)

Comment: would prefer to stay D5 in Asahikawa because Otaru is quite far away, and if we travel to Otaru at night, it would mean we will have to store our luggage at Furano station...

D 6: (Asahikawa - Sapporo): Sapporo Jogai Market, Hokkaido Shrine, Shiroi Koibito Park, Sapporo Beer Museum, (Sapporo)
D 7: Sankaku Market, (Otaru - Yoichi), Fruit picking, (Yoichi - Otaru), Music Box Museum, Kitaichi Glass, (Otaru - Sapporo), Susukino (Sapporo)

D8: Nijo Market, Odori Park, Tanukikoji, ..., (Sapporo - Lake Toya), (Lake Toya)
D9: Lake Toya - Noboribetsu in the late afternoon / evening, (Noboribetsu)

D10: Noboribetsu - Hakodate, Mt. Hakodate Ropeway, (Hakodate)
D11 Hakodate Morning Market, Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse, Motomachi, Fort Goryokaku, (Hakodate - Airport) - need to reach airport at 5pm for departure flight

Thanks in advance for any comments on the above!

Re: 10D Hokkaido early July 2017/6/30 12:45
I checked some of the most economical accommodations in this area with Google. I did not go into the details of the listed ones yet.

1500 Furano(Goryo) https://www.google.co.jp/maps/dir/''/''/@43.3379099,142.2915267,12z
7300 Asahikawa http://www006.upp.so-net.ne.jp/glass/mimatusoutop.html
8300 Shirogane https://www.google.co.jp/maps/dir/''/''/@43.4732262,142.5739606,12z

11000 Furano https://www.google.co.jp/maps/dir/''/''/@43.3430768,142.3223181,12z/
21907 Asahidake http://asahidake.net/
22520 Biei http://kunsthaus.p-kit.com/page0004.html
54000 Tokachidake http://shiyuirin.jp/
- Fukiage

https://www.google.co.jp/search?q=%E5%8C%97%E6%B5%B7%E9%81%93+%E5%AE%B...

I just set only one night, July 26. There are some festivals in this period. So, the situation could vary significantly.

July 24: Nachi Biei Fire Festival
http://www.furanotourism.com/en/spot/spot_D.php?id=460
http://www.biei-hokkaido.jp/en/event/
July 28 & 29: Hokkai Heso Matsuri (Furano)
http://www.furano.ne.jp/hesomatsuri/
July 29 & 30: Lake Kanayama Lavender & Fireworks Festival (Minami Furano)
http://www.furanotourism.com/en/spot/spot_D.php?id=462
Aug 3-5: Asahikawa Natsu Matsuri (Summer Festival)

As the Goryo area in Furano is a bit away from the JR station, your choice of Asahikawa is not a bad idea. You could choose the best sunny days for ropeways, however, the consecutive five nights in the same hotel could be boring. Asahikawa is a city. It looks like a business trip. Moreover, I am rather a one-night hopper.

No choice in Fukiage. I would forget Tokachidake. Biei could be done from Shirogane.

The maximum day trip to Asahidake permits a 7-hour trekking course available from late June to late July. So, it is not mandatory to stay in Asahidake.
Asahikawa 740-(Ideyu-Go)-906 Asahidake 915-(Ropeway)-925 Sugatami 1745-(Ropeway)-1755 Asahidake 1800-(Ideyu-Go)-1926 Asahikawa
http://www.asahikawa-denkikidou.jp/kyouei/ideyu%20gaikokugo(2016.10.1)...
http://wakasaresort.com/asahidakeropeway/course/summer.htm

I just pick up Asahidake on the previous post as a bonus for an arrival to Asahikawa Airport. You could drop this anyway. Kurodake alone should be OK as the Daisetsuzan National Park.

People used to stay in a lodge near the mountain. Doing so, an early departure is possible. And we could bath in an onsen just after the long hike to heal the body. The typical one for that is an 8-hour trekking from Akadake to Kurodake assisted by a morning Dohoku Bus. You need to stay in Sounkyo to get the bus in this case.
Sounkyo 602-(Dohoku Bus Akadake Line)-700 Ginsendai - Akadake - Kurodake-Ishimuro - Kurodake - Kurodake 7th -(Kurodake Lift)- Kurodake 5th -(Kurodake Ropeway)- Sounkyo

http://www.rinyu.co.jp/modules/pico01/index.php?content_id=46
http://www.rinyu.co.jp/modules/pico01/index.php?content_id=45

In Sounkyo, there is a stargazing and sunrise tour by a night stay at Kurodake-Ishimuro.
http://www.rinyu.co.jp/modules/pico01/index.php?content_id=58

If you take a morning ropeway, the possibility to see Unkai could be higher.
http://www.rinyu.co.jp/modules/pico01/index.php?content_id=70#‚¨‚͂悤ƒ[ƒvƒEƒFƒC

There are some other routes around Kurodake, but one of the most popular ones would be a 3-hour (1.7 km) Kurodake roundtrip.
Kurodake 7th -(up, 1:20)- Kurodake -(down, 1:00)- Kurodake 7th
http://www.rinyu.co.jp/modules/pico01/index.php?content_id=70#•Šx‚ð‚Ì‚Ú‚é
http://www.rinyu.co.jp/modules/pico01/index.php?cat_id=5
http://www.rinyu.co.jp/modules/pico01/index.php?content_id=45

So, if I arrive at Asahikawa Airport at 1900, I would do the following.

D1: Asahikawa Airport 2020-(Lavender-Go)-2111 Furano (11000 yen)
http://www.furanobus.jp/lavender/index.html
D2: Do Furano
Biei 1726-1752 Shirogane (8300 yen)
Walk to Blue Pond
http://www.hokkaidox.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/2-17-BUS-TIME-TABL...
D3: Shirogane 737-808 Biei
Do Biei
Biei 1546-1612 Shirogane 1643-1806 Asahikawa 1840-2030 Sounkyo (10903 yen)
http://www.dohokubus.com/files/17s-0701kamikawa.pdf
D4: Do the 3-hour Kurodake in the morning
Do Oobako by walk and bus: Sounkyo - Twin Waterfalls - Oobako 1315-(Dohoku Bus)-1323 Lake Taisetsu 1338-(Dohoku Bus)-1400 Sounkyo
Sounkyo 1420-1450 Kamikawa 1540-1847 Otaru
https://world.jorudan.co.jp/mln/en/?p=0&from=Kamikawa&to=Otaru&date=07...

If you prefer to stay in Asahikawa, Sounkyo could be done in a day with the 3-hour Kurodake after Oobako.

Asahikawa 700-813 Kamikawa 950-1020 Sounkyo - Twin Waterfalls - Oobako 1315-(Dohoku Bus)-1323 Lake Taisetsu 1338-(Dohoku Bus)-1400
Sounkyo - Kurodake - Sounkyo 1750-1820 Kamikawa 2036-2114 Asahikawa (7300 yen)

Furano and Biei should be easy from Asahikawa.

Asahikawa 539-708 Furano 2044-2142 Asahikawa

If you still have an interest in Asahidake, there is a 1-hour course that could be OK by late June.

After finishing it, you could even go up to Yoichi for the fruit picking on the next day.

If you perfer to climb the highest peak in Asahidake (also in Hokakkido), you would need 4 hours rather than 1 hour.

After the 1-hour Asahidake, you could finish all Biei with Patch Work Course as well. You could do Furano on the next day. I still suggest to leave the luggage there to go to the next. A small fee should cover your trip back to Asahikawa and also save the time for it.

Biei 1839-(JR)-1911 Asahikawa

You could even do both Asahidake and Sounkyo in a day from Asahikawa. It is a 7-hour trekking course from Asahidake to Kurodake, not for a beginner but very popular.

So, you might have some nights to add to the itineray. I checked some popular sites where econmical lodges are still available.

2800 Otaru https://www.otaruito.com/
4250 Utoro http://www.bonshome.com/
9651 Lake Akan http://www.big-hokkaido.com/sansuiso/

Here are some plans that might be interesting. If there is still a chance to chage the flight, I prefer these. Asahidake and Kurodake are similar. Sounkyo from Asahikawa involves a backtrakking. In the the below, Shiretoko via Kushiro could be better. Shiretoko via Abashiri has a backtrakking route.

Shakotan from Otaru
You may stop other than Cape Kamui including a fruit farm.
