24 Day itinerary - JR vs Suica/Pasmo 2017/7/2 07:49
Hi all!

I've never been to Japan before! So I hope you can give me a little advice.

I'm going to Japan for 24 days in August/September and I'm having trouble working out whether or not I should get a JR Pass, a Suica/Pasmo or a combination of the two. Hopefully you'll have some insight from my itinerary;

Arrive @ Narita Airport
5 Days Tokyo - (Visiting Asakusa, Odaiba, Shinjuku, Akihabara, Harajuku, Shibuya, Ueno & Mitaka)
2 Days Gifu - (Visiting Gujo-Hachiman for festival & local sights)
4 Days Kyoto - (Visiting local sights, shrines, temples, castles etc. Gion)
3 Days Hiroshima - (Visiting local museums & Miyajima)
4 Days Osaka - (Visiting museums, castle, shopping & day trip to Nara)
5 Days Tokyo - (Visiting more shrines/temples, Roppongi & last minute shopping)
1 Day Narita (Early morning flight, thought it best to stay in the area)

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

A 14 day JR pass might be viable from the day to Travel to Gifu, with day 14 being the day you return to Tokyo. You will still need a Suica card for the other days and the non JR services you use also.

Whether a JR pass will work will depend on you travels by train. I wont work out the cost for you. But you can easily do it using hyperdia.com, then compare it to the price of the pass.

Japan Rail Pass validity is consecutive period,
so it looks easy if use 21D Pass, but it will not be maney saving,
bc there are many days not taking much on "JR" trains.
May better that it will be cheaper to go to Hiroshima first by air or Shinkansen,
then back to Tokyo as oneway West to East.

Also "Suica" just no need bring cash mainly coins,
but there is no big discount like discounted passes for each big cities.

Osaka,Kyoto and Nara is same region,
it may be cheaper if you do not change accommodation,
but it may be late for reservations from now.

Mitaka means "Ghibli"?
If so, you can not make a reservation in Aug, bc very busy month by school summer holiday.
(It may be difficult even on weekdays evening 16:00- in Sep.)

The last night accommodation is only near Narita Airport.
Although you can sleep in airport, but it will not be comfortable bc it is not like hotel, just sleeping space.
(NRT official and some travelers web mentioned)
