Three days in nature on Yakushima? 2023/4/5 21:27
We'll arrive on Yakushima in early October for three nights, have a hire car booked, and want to do half day hikes in less crowded settings that experience forests (& shrublands, herbfields, swamps, etc) and landscapes . We're aware of the standard hikes to Jomon Sugi and the peaks.

What should we do and where should we stay?

We're thinking of staying somewhere down south, close to the coastal springs for a night, and need to stay somewhere else for the other two nights. We're interested in culture and place rather than luxury so recommendations of minshuku or simple ryokans (below Y15K pp) would be appreciated.

To be honest - the island is rather hilly so be warned.

The two locations which come to mind is Shiratani and Yakisugi Land.

If you drive along the west coast, make sure that you are a very skilled and confident driver. Driving amongst the monkeys and deep is amazing, but having a large bus coming full bore along a road with low visibility which one car struggles to pass is absolute hell.
