I remember back in the 80s, they would close off streets on Sundays outside Harajuku station and it would just be street performers as far as the eye could see. Is there anything like this in the Tokyo area anymore?

Harajuku is constantly changing, and that indeed was a thing in the '80s but not any more. It wasn't just the Takenoko-zoku dancers, but there were rock bands in rows, and I think they were done either legally or tolerated. Today, there is nothing equivalent to that, and the pandemic hasn't helped. But you can indeed find places to see some street performances depending on the theme. For example, these are places where you can see jugglers and the like: https://j-kanata.com/recommend-place/Shibuya has stood up to create a legal place for amateur musicians, but it seems there are no events planned at the moment. https://j-kanata.com/recommend-place/Shibuya Street Dance Week is to be held this Nov at Yoyogi Park where the '80s performers used to gather. https://streetdanceweek.jp/I hope it helps.

In front of Shinjuku station (in front of the Basta) I regularly see live performers. (Several at the same time)
And saw one on Friday evening in front of Shimokitazawa station.
