Buying childes gift Yukata or similar 2023/10/20 12:41
I am currently travelling around Japan on holiday and would like to buy a gift for my 5 year-old niece.
She loves dressing up so I thought I could find a yukata or kimono, not formal expensive ones, more playful. In Sapporo I asked in a department store that had kimonos for kids (very expensive, for formal Japanese occasions) and they said that Yukatas arenet sold at the moment.

Any ideas if I could find what Iem looking for?
I will be spending 2 nights in Okayama and 8 nights in Tokyo (otherwise rural) before leaving.

Type in Yukata and Tokyo in Google maps and a lot will come up.
Ifd think in some very touristy places such as Asakusa (around Sensoji) it should be easy and youfll likely be there anyway.
You can also type in Yukata on google maps and things will come up. Just weed out the rental places.
Regarding currently not being on sale, well, a Yukata is a summer dress so it makes sense that in stores exclusively geared towards local population there are none now. But in tourist areas there will be year around.

Tansuya I think is a second hand kimono store: https://tansuya.jp/store/tansuya-shinnakamise/

In Kyoto maybe best choice of yukatas (adult and kid ) is in Handicraft Centre - possibly there is similar place in Tokyo?

I agree with LikeBike that the type of things you're looking for can very often be found where souvenir shops are, and in that sense, your last bet would be the international airport you're leaving Japan from. If you could tell us the airport, perhaps someone can help you pinpoint a shop from its official map.

Thanks to everyone, I will actually be staying for 5 nights in Asakusa and leaving from Haneda so hopefully can manage what Iem hoping for.

Thanks for the feedback. Here are some I found through Googling.

Asakusa Nakamise is a long outdoor arcade that leads worshipers to the temple of Sensoji.

Fujiya is located at E11 on the map above, with gate on the left and temple on right

Suzuya is located at E48 on the map

There are probably a lot more of these kind of shops in Nakamise.

And below is Haneda's official website in English language.

Note that cotton and polyester are machine-washable, very easy to handle and more affordable, while silk is more expensive, formal and needs very special care.

Happy shopping!
