Self-driving in Hokkaido (end-March/April)

Hi!

Will be heading to HKD in the end of March to early April, and would like to seek advice if it is advisable/safe to drive.

Looked at the daily weather and there seem to be a few days with snow/rain. It will be my first time driving in Japan so am slightly concerned and hesitant to venture too far away/long drive.

Areas we are thinking of visiting outside Sapporo and will drive to are Otaru (2 days), Lake Toya (2 days) and Furano (2 days). I know that it'll be too early for flowers/cherry blossoms so was wondering if Furano is still worth a visit nevertheless to places like ningle terrace and Biel area etc. Appreciate recommendations!
