Kamikochi or Kumano Koda

Thanks to those who answered a previous question of mine, this is based on those answers:

We will be in Japan in July. Deciding between Kamikochi or Kumano Koda / Dorokyo Gorge for walking and river adventures.
If you've been to both, which would you choose as unmissable?
And is there a great onsen ryoken experience nearby.

In July, I would definitely choose the Japanese alps to escape the heat. If you are from Europe, Kumano Kodo would be more exotic than Kamikochi, though.
