Where to buy a Japanese made rain umbrella? 2024/3/21 08:04
I would like to buy a nicely made Japanese Rain umbrella as a souvenir. I'm thinking a long umbrella not compact. I saw photos of some lovely colorful umbrellas - solid colors. I'm staying in Shinjuku. Hoping to spend @ $100 USD or less. Thanks.

I'm afraid quality umbrellas in general aren't that cheap. I don't know what you mean by "nicely made Japanese Rain umbrella", but if it's a made-in-Japan product, moreover something traditional, you need to pay more than twice as much.

Perhaps you can deal with something using fabric and stem with somewhat Japanese designs. In particular, there are reasonably-priced umbrellas with more number of ribs (which are reminiscent of traditional paper umbrellas), and they tend to be stronger just because of the many ribs.

You can go to a random department store in Shinjuku to look for a design you'd like. Otherwise, the Internet led me to a nice-looking brand called Hokusai Graphic that seem to sell their umbrellas at various brick-and-mortar shops such as The Ichi in Shinjuku Marui Annex.

It seems that some Hokusai Graphic products only cost about 5000 yen.

Here is another affordable brand that has a shop in Jiyugaoka, Tokyo.

And just for your reference, here are the real quality ones.

Actually, I've been to the Fujiyougasa store in Haneda Airport just to take a look at their best (non-paper) umbrellas, and the solid-colored red was exquisite! But remember that umbrellas are easy to lose!

I hope it helps.

Thank you for the great info. I will definitely check them out. I'm not looking for a Geisha type umbrella more a well made rain umbrella to use and remember my time in Japan. A practical souvenir. Around $100 usd. But I want a Japanese manufacturer , doesn't make sense to buy a made in China umbrella. I could do that at home lol.

Department stores such as Takashimaya and Isetan have a good selection and likely some will be made in Japan. There is also a flagship Waterfront store in Jiyugaoka which only sells umbrellas, and they definitely have some made in Japan ones. You can expect to pay a premium for these.

I went to Fujiyoshida in February and discovered some great fabric products.
Among them, Makita Shoten specializes in umbrellas.

In Shinjuku, it seems to be sold at the rooms SHOP on the 2nd floor of Lumine Shinjuku store 2.
