Using Regional Train Passes

With the price increases on the JR passes, we can't justify a general JR pass for our trip. For part of our upcoming trip, the JR Kansai Hiroshima pass will help with a portion. However, we will be traveling from Takayama (which I believe is outside the region for the pass) to Hiroshima. Can we use the pass for the portion that is within the region, for example the shinkansen from Osaka to Hiroshima? Thank you!
