Dear visitor, if you know the answer to this question, please post it. Thank you!

transportation questions 2024/3/26 03:23
we land at 4pm into haneda. wanted to take limousine bus to our hotel in Yanaka but think we land too late. what other options do we have to get to our hotel? how expensive wilt taxi be? it will be a Saturday and we are staying at Sawanoya Ryokan in Tokyo.

Second question-I will buy the Setouchi plass on the JR site. So I can only buy it 30 days prior to our picking it up correct? The day we pick it up IS NOT the same day we will activate it. we will pick it up at Haneda (assuming JR office is open). But picking it up and making reservations, this does not activate it, correct? We won't do that for another week plus.

thanks again

A taxi will be maybe around 7000 Yen plus minus.
By public transport youfd take monorail to Hamamatsucho and then Yamanote line to Nippori. There I would take a taxi as itfs a rather long walk if you have luggage. Alternatively google maps will give you also combinations with a bus.

Ah Sawanoya. I have stayed there several times & they have always been very welcoming. The best way to get there from Haneda is as has been said to head for Nezu subway station. Here is a link to the options for a Saturday assuming you are ready to get the train by 18:00 & tbh you should be through the airport before then.

"is it just one train to nezu station? "

No. You need to change trains at Mita & then from train to subway at Otemachi. However I think it should be quite easy even with your luggage. If you have an IC card (Suica, Pasmo etc) it would be even easier. Trains are frequent, for instance the subway trains run every 6 minutes. So there will be no rush & it's only 660 Yen.

The info is in the link I posted. It is just a link to a Navitime search, honest :)

Are you sure you can pick up the Setouchi pass at Haneda Airport? I thought you had to pick up the actual pass within the area of validity, at a JR West office. You specify the start date as part of the process for the online purchase of the pass.

But you can make seat reservations online before (or after) you actually pick up the pass. See Ujifs post on the following thread:

Re: transportation questions 2024/3/27 10:19
Hi, I'm trying to figure out whether it makes sense for me to get the JR Kansai Hiroshima Area Pass because I'm confused whether this includes the train to get from Kyoto to Hiroshima or not. Under "Validity" #2 says: "Unlimited use of the Sanyo Shinkansen (including Nozomi and Mizuho) between Shin-Osaka and Hiroshima. However, the Tokaido Shinkansen between Kyoto and Osaka is not covered." -- Does this mean that the Tokaido Shinkansen line is not included in general (i.e., not valid to use to get from Kyoto to Hiroshima) or that it is specifically not available to travel between Kyoto and Osaka?

Alternatively, is it possible to get from Kyoto to Hiroshima using the Sanyo Shinkansen (included in the Kansai Hiroshima pass)?

Both passes don't allow usage of the Tokaido shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Kyoto.

You can use it between Shin-Osaka and Hiroshima, Sanyo shinkansen...

"specifically not available to travel between Kyoto and Osaka" Shinkansen not covered (different company). For that piece, use a regular train between Kyoto and Shin-Osaka.

JR Kansai Hiroshima Area Pass : issued and discounted by JR West.
shinkansen from Shin-Osaka to Hiroshima is operated by JR West.
shinkansen from Kyoto to Shin-Osaka is operated by JR Tokai (Central).

if you use this pass from Kyoto to Hiroshima,
take a regular train from Kyoto to Shin-Osaka. there are many rapid services (no additional fee@ for you ). it takes about 25 mins. at Shin-Osaka, change trains from a regular train to Shinkansen (for transfer it may take 10-15 mins.). you can reserved your seat (of shinkansen from Shin-Osaka to Hiroshima) at Kyoto (and of course at Shin-Osaka).

what other options do we have to get to our hotel?
we are staying at Sawanoya Ryokan in Tokyo

A backpacker can walk to Sawanoya Ryokan
from Sendagi Station (C15) or Nezu Station (C14)
on the Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line,
which is symbolized by a green circle.

("Ryokan" refers to inn rather than hotel.)

we will have a carry on and backpack each.

If you hope to avoid stairs, I recommend Sendagi Station (C15).

The elevator exit of Sendagi Station (C15)
is closer to Sawanoya Ryokan,
compared to that of Nezu Station (C14).

(Please don't confuse
subway Sendagi and JR Sendagaya Stations.)

[Mita - Otemachi route]

The one way fare is about 700 yen per adult.

Stan Norrell
You need to change trains at Mita & then from train to subway at Otemachi.

You are already on the subway at Mita Station (A08).

From Haneda Airport,
you can take a Keikyu - Toei subway through train,
which continues beyond Sengakuji (A07)
onto the Toei subway Asakusa Line.

Feel free to ask a Keikyu (pronounced like KQ) attendant
which train goes for Asakusa.

Keikyu trains leaving Haneda Airport
have many destinations, in multiple directions.

Stan Norrell
However I think it should be quite easy even with your luggage

I agree that the two transfers are relatively easy.

According to the station maps,
the both transfers can be done without stairs.

(On these subway station maps,
pale yellow areas are inside the ticket gates.)

Mita Station transfer {(A08) -> (I04)}
from the Toei subway Asakusa Line (Track 2)
to the Toei subway Mita Line (Track 4)
: You do this completely inside the ticket gate.

Otemachi Station transfer {(I09) -> (C11)}
from the Toei subway Mita Line (Track 2)
to the Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line (Track 6)
: You go outside the Toei subway ticket gate
then go inside the Tokyo Metro ticket gate.

[Hamamatsuchō - Nishi-nippori route]

The one way fare is about 900 yen per adult.

it will be a Saturday

So, there will be no commuter rushes;
JR Yamanote Line trains would not be super-crowded.

You can take this route, with two transfers.

HND Terminal 2 or 3
| [Tokyo Monorail]
Monorail Hamamatsucho
: Transfer Gate:
Hamamatsuchō (JK23) / (JY28):
Track 1 / Track 2
| [JR Yamanote / Keihin-Tōhoku Line: Local train]
Track 4 / Track 3:
Nishi-Nippori (JK33) / (JY08)
: Transfer Gate:
Nishi-nippori (C16):
Track 1
| [Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line]
Track 1:
Sendagi (C15) --OR--
Track 1:
Nezu (C14).

Tokyo Monorail - JR transfer
: You go down by escalator
from the middle of the monorail platform
to the concourse,
turn right, go through the transfer gate,
then go down by escalator or elevator
to the JR platform for Tracks 1 and 2.
: Monorail Hamamatsucho Station
is under the reconstruction works;
details of the transfer may be different.

JR - Tokyo Metro transfer
: You go down by escalator twice,
following signs for the Chiyoda Line
(with capital "C" in green circle);
then you go through the transfer gate
to the Chiyoda Line platform for Track 1.

- Map of subway subway Nezu Station (C14)
https://www.tokyometro.jp/station/yardmap_img/figure_yardmap_nezu_all....

At any of these two stations,
trains from Nishi-nippori use Track 1
and trains from Otemachi use Track 2.

how expensive wilt taxi be?

A fixed fare, which is 8400 yen per car during the daytime,
applies to your taxi ride from Haneda Airport to Taitō City.
(If your taxi uses a toll road, you pay the toll separately.)

When you take a taxi from Sendagi Station or Nezu Station
to Sawanoya Ryokan,
the taxi fare would be 500 yen to 800 yen per car, I suppose.

Re: transportation questions 2024/3/27 16:22
Thank you @Omotenashi. The top answer I got from Navitime seemed to show two changes & I went with that. Always happy to be corrected :)

The thing with the Shinkansen between Kyoto & Osaka confuses a lot of people.

@Plambers Have a great trip. I wish I was heading back to Hiroshima!

Re: transportation questions 2024/3/29 02:07
Thanks all for your help. Since its our first trip to Japan it is all so unknown. Thinking we might just take a taxi but its a considerable savings taking train so will look at the options you all kindly supplied. We are very excited as its a mother daughter trip and we hope to make many memories. I hope my husband I can go in 2025 since it will all still be fresh in my memory!

We do have to pick up our Setouchi pass at Kyoto station upon our arrival there so one less thing to do at Haneda.

Does it really save time downloading the QR code in advance? We will both have Suica card on our phones.
