Nagoya-Takayama JR Pass 2008/2/15 12:22
I travelled from Nagoya to Takayama using the JR nationwide pass. Enjoyed the scenic views during the ride.

Yes, u r right that shirakawa-go is accessible by bus only. U may get the ticket at the Nouhi bus ticket counter next to JR Takayama station.
Alternatively, you may email Nouhi bus to make reservation.

The timetable is as follows (subject to changes):
Takayama-Shirakawago
08:45----10:42
09:30----11:05
11:10----12:54
14:40----16:37
15:20----16:55
17:35----19:37

Shirakawa-Takayama
05:56----07:56
10:05----11:40
12:15----14:10
14:20----16:07
16:05----17:40
17:15----19:10

If you just intend to make a return trip between Nagoya and Takayama, a JR pass wouldn't make sense at all. Making some other longish trips besides the Takayama trip justifies the pass.

Between Nogoya and Takayama, take the JR limited Express 'Hida'. In case you travel by 14th of March, search the connection through the following site.
http://www.hyperdia.com/cgi-english/hyperWeb.cgi

There is a schedule revision on JR Lines on 15th March.

The Hida will run 10 times daily each way, takes 2 hours 20 minutes in average and cost 5,870 yen each way. New schedules.

Departures from Nagoya: 7:43, 8:43, 9:43, 10:48, 11:48, 12:48, 14:48, 15:48, 17:48 and 19:43

From Takayama: 6:50, 8:07, 9:37, 11:35, 12:43, 13:38, 14:40, 15:36, 16:43, 18:42

The bus between Nagoya and Takayama runs 9 times a day each way, takes 2 hour 40 minutes and costs 2,900 yen for one way, and 5,000 yen for return.

As for the bus between Takayama and Shirakawago, refer to the timetable below.

Takayama to Shirakawago; one way: 2,400yen, return: 4,300yen
8:45--10:42
9:30--11:05 (reservation mandatory)
11:10--12:54
14:40--16:37
15:20--16:55 (reservation mandatory)

Shirakawago to Takayama
10:05--11:40 (reservation mandatory)
12:15--14:10
14:20--16:07
16:05--17:40 (reservation mandatory)
17:15--19:10

JR bus 2008/2/15 13:06
There are three JR bus operations on that segment each way daily, but I don't believe a JR pass is applicable for them.
I should have mentioned earlier in the previous post.

English Email Address Needed 2008/3/11 20:48
actually I do not have the answer, but I, too, have been hunting for an English email address to reach Nouhi Bus Co. to reserve seats from Takayama-Shirakawa-go-Takayama.

I see that you have mentioned it but did not write down the English address, can you plse help by forwarding us the address?

Tks!

Nohi Bus Company 2008/3/23 00:22
Nohi Bus Company's e-mail address is: jidosya@nouhibus.co.jp

I recently called them (0577-32-1688) to make a reservation and the person who helped me spoke enough English.

Hope this helps.

Good luck and have a nice trip!
