how to get to Tomonoura

I will be in Japan soon and wish to visit the town of Tomonoura, where Miyazaki modelled the town in the Ponyo movie.
I have used Jorudan & Hyperdia & Wikipedia - seems that the train service from I think Fukuyama to Tomonoura does not run any more. Can anyone tell me how to get there from Hiroshima?

Can anyone tell me if there's any accommodation for travellers in Tomonoura or would it be better to day-trip from Fukuyama or Hiroshima?
