Can you advise on the best value rail pass/es for our itinerary? We will be travelling with our son and his Japanese girlfriend who live in the area, but may not be able to buy some passes, I understand.
Kix to Kanazawa
day 1 Kanazawa (jet lag recovery)
then-Fukui- overnight onsen on coast
day 3- Kanazawa
day 4 to Hiroshima
(2 full days hiroshima area)
then to Kobe (himeji en route)
3 nights Kobe area
3 nights Osaka (incl. day trip to Kyoto)
Kix home
Not sure if the JR West sanyo or Kansai passes are going to be worthwhile- the full JR pass is really out of our price range.

Regular train tickets for the itinerary will cost about the same as a 7-day Japan Rail Pass. If that is out of your price range, you will have to take highway buses instead or drop some of the more remote destinations, e.g. Kanazawa or Hiroshima.
