Driving to Izu 2010/8/5 11:50
Hello,

We plan to drive to Izu island on 12 Aug, Stay overnite and return on 13th evening. Planning to visit and stay at Shimoda on first day and then travel towards dogashima the next day.
As this is the Obon weekend, Need your opinion in terms of
1) Traffic condition
2) Rush on Izu island/beaches
3) Weather conditions.

Thanks a lot

Traffic condition

Very bad, especially if you come from Tokyo. Expect to spend a considerably part of your holidays in the car. Traffic along the peninsula's east coast is particularly bad.

Rush on Izu island/beaches

You should expect them to be packed.

Thank you so much Uji san,

Sounds like its better to spend the holidays watching movies at home, Will look for any other date maybe early Sept, Would the beaches be still open for swimming around early Sept?
What would be best time to visit Izu after the obon week?

Guest,

I went down to Yumigahama beach, south of Shimoda, at the end of July, and was surprised by how relatively uncrowded it was. Traffic was only a problem around Atami, where the beaches were packed. However, Obon will obviously be the busiest time, so I would at least try to wait until after then. The official beach open season probably ends in August, so that just means you swim at your own risk outside that season.
