Driving from Fukuoka to Beppu

Hi. Can anyone help me with this question?
I intend to rent a car from Fukuoka-airport and drive to Beppu for an overnight stay. The next day, I'll drive to Aso-san and then to kumamoto to drop it off.
1. Is there a non highway/expressway road to travel from FUK airport to Beppu? I don't mind the slightly slower way but am wondering how many more hours it will be, since I may save money on Toll.

The answer to your question is "yes".
It will take you at least two hours longer to get to Beppu taking "surface" roads than toll roads.
To see possible routes and times, type in Google maps Fukuoka in a search box on your browser. Find the airport, right click on the airplane icon and select "Directions from here". Replace "Fukuoka" in the "A" location by typing in "Beppu" then click on the first choice from the pop-ups. Click on the car icon above the "Get Directions" box. Then click on the "Show Options" link below. Once this opens, check the "Avoid Tolls" box and click "Get Directions". You'll see a number of choices for routes that you can choose. Times are estimated, of course, and depend on traffic.
Good luck!!

I recommend to take the toll road at least to Kurume IC as the Route 3 is congested & slow. Have a ramen break in Kurume. Then, take the local routes 210 along Chikugo river, through rice fields, between mountains/streams, unknown(to foreigners) onsen towns like Harazuru & Amagase, 216 to Yufuin staying there a night instead of Beppu, then 11 & 52 to Beppu(follow Kamenoi bus). From Beppu, come back the same way and take Yamanami HW Rt 11 via Kuju, Kurokawa onsen to Aso. It will take a lot longer stopping interesting places here & there.

Tess, stay in Yufuin. I have a recommendation there, even if you may be solo. Amagase is on the river and we stayed one night a long time ago but no longer popular.
