Osaka-Tokyo Train 2010/12/6 17:30
Hi,
Appreciate further help here in regards to buying/taking trains. I understand there are Metros (trains that runs in the city) and there are trains that runs between cities. I just arn't too clear with train tickets I should buy before hand for my family of 5.

From Osaka Airport into Osaka
Within Osaka for 2 days
From Osaka to Nara
From Nara to Kyoto
Within Kyoto for 2 days
From Kyto to Mt Fuji or Hakone
Mt Fuji or Hakone to Toyoko
Within Tokyo for 4 days
Tokyo to Narita

Is JR Pass good for all these rides I am going to take? or are they others I should buy as well.

Thanks (again),
James

You better think in terms of train companies than metro vs. intercity. Here are some basics:

The Japan Rail Pass will not pay off for your trip. It is cheaper to travel by regular tickets. In the cities, I recommend looking into prepaid cards:

If you are arriving into Japan via Kansai International Airport and departing via Narita Airport a JR Rail Pass would not be good value.

As far as reservations, possibly only Kyoto towards Tokyo may need advanced reservations.

As to other passes within Osaka/Kyoto/Tokyo and within the Hakone or Fuji regions, this would depend on where you plan to go. Look up those locations on this site and try to plan an itinerary.
