Temple lodgings near Kyoto (1 hour max) 2011/2/1 19:10
Hello, can you help me with a tricky question? I would like to stay at a temple lodging. We will be in Kyoto at the end of July, hot! We had thought of Koya san, but it takes around 3 hours to get there, plus it fits in our itinerary at the weekend. I have heard that Koyasan is very busy at the weekend. Is there a sutable alternaitef on the outskirts of kyoto, or something within 1 hour travelling with the train? We had also hoped that the altitude might give us a little bit of a cooler situation than the centre of kyoto. Any other tips are very welcome.

Although located inside Kyoto, the temple lodgings generally come with a calm atmosphere:

Do you know if any of the temple lodgings in Kyoto are situated in the nature? Also would be preferable for a little bit of fresh air away from the heat in the city. I will be travelling at the end of July.

Most of those on the great list Uji gave you are obviously within Kyoto so what nature there is are gardens, not the wild outdoors....have a look at a couple of temples on Google then switch to maps and street views to actually see the area.

Many are listed but all are not practical or feasible or shukubo(i.e. Hanazono Kaikan, it is just a ryokan outside of a temple property).
Two I recommend to look into are Zen temples in the same vast Myoshinji-temple property west side of Kyoto city, either by bus or JR train(10min. walk from Hanazono station).
1. Shunko-in, one of the abbots there is US educated. Students from abroad stay there for study.

2. Daishin-In, a beautiful garden, delicious Shojin Ryori(monk's meal) & Zen meditation, if you wish. Popular for single female travelers & Europeans. We stayed here. Very clean, tranquil, no tourists. Book by sending a post card.
