Japan Rail Pass 2012/6/10 15:18
Hello Team,

We are in Tokyo for 10 days and are looking to travel to Kyoto during this time.

It would appear to make sense to purchase the Japan Rail Pass.

1) Would it be best to activate this to travel from Narita Airpot to Tokyo Station?

2) Does the Rail pass cover the metro lines and JR lines eg Shinjuku to Maihama which uses a combination of both.

Obviously if we activate it the first day we arrive and asssume we go to Kyoto within that seven days. At the end of our trip we will need to pay as we go i assume and pay the 3000 yen to get back to the airport. It would still work out cheaper than a 14 day pass.

Is there are more cost effective or better way to do it?

Thanks in adavance

Yes, but only if you make a round trip between Tokyo and Kyoto.

Assuming that your hotel is more easily reachable by JR than non-JR lines, then I would recommend you to buy the Suica&NEX package to get into Tokyo, and then use the Japan Rail Pass to cover your round trip to Kyoto and the ride back to the airport.

No, it does not cover the metro line, but yes, it does cover the JR Lines, e.g. Shinjuku to Maihama.

The best use of JR Pass should be;

To activate it at the first day of arrival, and make the round Kyoto trip by day 7.

or

To activate it at the day 4 and make the Kyoto trip by day 10.

since airport access is usually more expensive than getting around the city.
