What is this statue holding? 2012/6/15 19:58
At the Kitain Temple I very much enjoyed the 500 Statues of Rakan all with different faces and expressions. Certainly worth a visit. I do have a question however, what is this particular statue holding? http://monochrome.me.uk/images/Statue.jpg
I'm sure it isn't what it looks like at first glance but I cannot find an answer. The photo is tiny but I think it is large enough for you to make it out.

Maybe an incense burner?

Somebody suggested a stupa and although the shape does resemble some of the stupas I have seen, it doesn't look right.

A conch shell is one of the "eight auspicious symbols" in Buddhism and that's what I first thought of when I saw the picture.

Excellent Sira-san, that really looks like that could be it!

It seems to be a Houju (sacred gem).
