Looking for Ryokan around Kyoto

My husband and me are planning a trip to Kyoto next year around september / october. We would like to stay in a traditional japanese inn (ryokan) preferable with onsen. Also we'd like to visit temples (and the markets) and other places.
Has anybody some good ideas concerning the ryokan or the places to visit around Kyoto? We'd appreciate every good idea/suggestion! Thank you in advance!

I don't think there are any real onsen in central Kyoto. You would have to stay in the outskirts, such as Arashiyama, Ohara or Kurama for a ryokan with onsen. As for recommendations, it is difficult without knowing your budget. Budget ryokan are available for as little as around 5000 yen per person without meals on one extreme, and can cost more than 50,000 yen per person including two meals on the other extreme. If you have no budget constraints, I recommend the Tawaraya Ryokan, one of the finest ryokan in all of Japan - if not the finest: http://www.kyoto-club.com/tomaru/rkn/tawaraya.html

Thank you for your help. We haven't worked on a budget yet, because we will get married next year in June. So what's left after the wedding isn't so sure. Therefore it will be perfectly fine to first search and then limit the list to a few. Also my Japanese is also really limited to a few words and phrases. I do understand sometimes but answering is hard. Will that be a big problem?

Hi Sunakon, maybe I can help you. When I was the first time in Japan with my travel mate we accommodated in a private cottage directly based in Kyoto donwn-town. The accommodation is located in a quit back alley, but very comfortable to reach the main attractions in less minutes by foot. The cottage is running by an American guy (Mike Barr, columnist of Lonely Planet) and his Japanese wife. So you can get insider-tips / informations from a local in English.
Here is the website: http://suisenkyo.com/index.html
We use to sleep in 'Shirakawa machiya townhouse'. Maybe it meets your expectations.
Grüße aus Dresden ;)

Thank you for the information. The house looks very nice But probalby my husband won't agree with that, because "when you're on vacation you shouldn't need to cook for yourself"-kind of answer will come. haha
Do you have any other "insider-tips" for me concerning sightseeing, shopping and so on?

Thank you for the websites! They are really great for researching!
I have found a lot. Now we just have to decide on one ryokan or hotel!
Have some of you know the temple markets in Kyoto and when they take place?

I agree with Uji - if your budget allows, stay at Tawaraya. My wife and I stayed there two years ago; the kaiseki meal was delicious, the ambience of the ryokan wa sublime, and the hospitality welcoming. A+++!
Tawaraya ryokan wa sugoi desu.

Dear Uji, Dear Tim desu
I looked at the website of Tawaraya Ryokan. Unfortunately I don't understand Japanese therefore I looked it up on japancan.com.
But there aren't many information provided. Could you share your experience with us and tell us more about the Tawaraya Ryokan as it is quite that what we have been looking for?
Thank you in advance

But to add, I have looked up a german website which quite shocked me for the costs for one night stay. Though we don't have a budget, that is definitely too much. Our budget would be more about 20.000 Y per person. Any ideas?
