Kyushu floodings and Kurokawa Onsen 2012/7/16 01:58
We are a bit concerned about the floodings and the bad weather situation in Kyushu and the Aso region and how it will affect our visit to Kurokawa onsen.
Can we reach Kurokawa Onsen by road (rental car) from Fukuoka?
Is Kurokawa Onsen affected and are the onsen baths fully in operation?
Thanks

Kurokawa Onsen did not suffer damage, and is accessible by road from Fukuoka.

There are some road closures in the greater region, and if you travel within the next couple days you may run into one or two (especially around Mount Aso), but the main road to Kurokawa is open. With each additional day, the situation will be improving quite quickly unless there comes another storm.

Here is the current state of road closures for Kumamoto Prefecture:

And for Fukuoka Prefecture:

If you travel in the very near future and are not the adventurous type of traveler, you may want to consult with your ryokan.
